You can use this resource to present in an assembly (10-15 mins) or as a standalone lesson as I have included worksheets. It is editable to suit learning abilities of your pupils. Remember to ‘Save As’, give a new name to the Presentation before editing. You can change the date of Mother’s Day as it changes each year. Content: • Assembly/Lesson Notes • 19 Slides – PowerPoint Presentation • Mother’s Day card to colour in and add additional designs • Worksheet 1 – Pupils draw four things and write simple sentences of what their mums do for them. • Worksheet 2 – Pupils draw four things and write simple sentences of what they will do on Mother’s Day to make it special • Worksheet 3 – Pupils complete a cloze activity. Meaning of Mother’s Day Traditional Simnel Cake now linked to Easter History of Mother’s Day and the ‘Mother’ Church Children think about how they can make their mums feel special on the day When USA and Mexico celebrate their Mother’s Day Geography link – You could ask pupils to locate USA, Canada, Australia, UK and Mexico on the map as they are all on different continents. Simple Ready-made card This is for some pupils who are reluctant to design a card. See preview pane. Print off the sheet onto card or good quality paper. Pupils can decorate and colour in and add their name at the bottom. Then fold along the line to look like a card. Second sheet with the heart should be printed on normal paper. Tell pupils to decorate the sheet with the large heart on and then cut out to stick onto the front of the card. 3 Optional Worksheets to use after assembly or lesson. Worksheet 1 – Pupils draw four things and write simple sentences of what their mums or foster mum or gran do for them. Worksheet 2 – Pupils draw four things and write simple sentences of what they will do to make Mother’s Day special. For example, he/she could draw themselves giving mum a tray with breakfast in bed and then write a sentence correctly punctuated. Additional Worksheet 3 – This worksheet is in two parts. There is a gap-filling activity with the words in the word bank. The second part is finding which day of the week is missing and then writing it. Extension work example For the more able children, you can ask how many hearts altogether. This will lead into more formal addition work: 3 green hearts + 4 orange hearts equals 7 hearts altogether. This is a lesson/assembly presentation resource on St Valentine's Day, February 14. Learning Aims: To learn who was Saint Valentine and his connection to St Valentine’s Day. Aimed at: Reception/KS1 Content: - Teacher Notes on The Story of St Valentine referring to Slide numbers - Teacher Notes on Assembly Presentation - 22 Slide PowerPoint Presentation - Worksheet 1 – Writing - Love is … - Worksheet 2 – Jumbled Words and Sentences Activity - with Answer Sheet - 2 Word Searches – Upper and lower case letters - with Solutions This resource can be used as a 1 hour lesson and I have uploaded Teacher Notes/Guide which contains starter activity, main lesson and plenary. Slides are referred to in the Teacher Notes/Guide. I have also included Teacher Notes/Guide on Assembly with options to delete slides for a 10 to 15 mins assembly. The Presentation begins with a starter activity - the Lead up to St Valentines - stores displaying Valentine related items. It then leads into the story of St Valentine, his run-in with Claudius II, curing the jailers blind daughter and symbols relating to the celebration. Reflection - Children learn that Valentine's Day isn't just about romance but has other meanings, e.g. Love is patience, kindness etc. Consolidation Worksheet 1 - children write in a few sentences what love is... An example is given Worksheet 2 - Jumbled sentences and words - children rearrange each sentence and add a full stop. The second part is to sort out jumbled words using the pictures as clues. 2 Word Searches containing related vocabulary - in upper and lower case letters. This is a fun problem-solving activity for St. Valentine’s Day as an introduction to using glyphs in the shape of whole and half-shaped hearts to work out addition and subtraction sums. Aimed at: Reception/KS1 Content: - 12 Slide PowerPoint Presentation - 3 Addition Worksheets - 4 Subtraction Worksheets - Answer Sheets Start the lesson by asking students if they know what hieroglyphs and/or glyphs are and who used them and why they were used instead of the number system we use today. Slides 3-4 The presentation lesson begins by briefly explaining how the Aztecs and the Mayans used hieroglyphs/glyphs to represent numbers and then the class have a go at working out the numbers. Main lesson Slides 5 – 13 The lesson goes on to explain using whole hearts and half-shaped hearts as glyphs and then using these symbols to solve addition and take away sums. It includes whole class activity and detailed examples of how the students work out the answers. Remind the students that the number of half-shaped hearts tells you how many whole hearts to take away. Students can use different methods to work out the problems, for example, if the students see 7 whole hearts, they add them up to make 7 as one whole heart is equal to 1. For subtraction, if the children see 7 whole hearts and 4 half-shaped hearts, they hold up 7 fingers and then fold down 4 fingers to take away the 4 half-shaped hearts. Consolidation There are three worksheets for students to add up the hearts and four worksheets on taking away. Answer sheets included. Aimed at: Reception/Year 1 If you operate a carousel system in your class, you can place the different activities on the tables for children to practise number work/patterns. Content and Description Includes Teacher Notes • Counting in ones missing number sequence worksheet – Children complete sequence by writing the missing numbers in the heart. • Number bonds to 10 and 20 - x2 sets of worksheets – this is a cut and stick activity. Children cut out a broken heart on worksheet 2 to match and stick to a broken heart on worksheet 1. The hearts add up to 10 on one set of worksheets; and then add up to 20 on the second set of worksheets. • Counting using Tens Frame – Pictures are placed in different positions on the tens frame. Children count and write the number in the space provided. • Count and tick to match activity – Numicon – Children count the pictures in the squares and then tick the Numicon shape that matches the number of pictures. • Colour Sequence Worksheet – Children work out what comes next in the colour sequence and then complete the last two or three squares. The pictures are: hearts, Valentine envelopes and lips. • Picture Sequence – Cut and stick activity – Children look at the pictures and work out what comes next. This product relates to recording data, completing tally charts, creating a pictogram and completing block graphs. Aimed at: KS1 Content and description: - Teacher Notes Favourite Colour Hearts: • Worksheet A – Students complete the tally chart by counting the hearts shown below. • Worksheet B – Cut and glue activity. Students use the data from the tally chart to colour in the hearts. Then they cut out the hearts and glue onto the pictogram worksheet to produce a pictogram. Students then give the pictogram a title. • Worksheet C – Students answer questions relating to the pictogram/tally chart. (9 questions and colour the heart in their favourite colour) - ANSWERS PROVIDED • Additional work – Block Graph Worksheet. Students complete the graph with the same data used for the pictogram above. Minibeasts, bugs, insects bingo game. Your students can also play Snap! and matching pair cards. Increase vocabulary of minibeasts. Great value Minibeasts resource which contains: Teacher’s Notes 35 bingo cards labelled Card 1 to Card 35 30 different minibeasts call out cards 36 picture cards for a game of snap 36 picture cards with name labels which can also be used for snap The pictures are photos of common invertebrates. Preparation: Print onto card paper and laminate the bingo cards. Laminate both sets of picture cards and cut out. Play bingo as a whole class or children play in smaller groups. Play ‘Snap!’ Matching card game - - Lay out, say, 10 sets of matching cards face down on the table - players take turns to turn over two cards. If two cards match, he or she keeps the cards. If the two cards do not match the cards are placed put back again. The player with the most matching cards is the winner. Other uses: Create a minibeasts word wall - reprint the call-out cards and picture cards for a wall display. This is an extra resource on the Euro currency coins 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, 1 euro and 2 euro coins. Updated 17 May 2022 include versions 2 an 3 reflecting how the euro/cents are written, e.g. €2.25 or 2,25€ and cents written as ‘c’. Aimed at: KS1 students learning about the euro/cents, EFL/ESL students The worksheets are in colour and black and white. ANSWERS are provided where appropriate. Each of the four worksheets contain a variety of tasks for students to complete on the topic of buying school stationery. Worksheet 1 - Students look at the pictures and price of each item and then work out how much two items of school supplies cost. Two questions at the bottom: Which student spent the most? Which student spent the least amount of money? Worksheet 2 - This worksheet is similar to the above except students add three items of stationery together. Worksheet 3 - Students answer 6 questions about the items, e.g. Which item is the most expensive? How much less does the eraser cost than the calculator? etc. The next task is to write the new price for each item which has risen by 10 cents. Worksheet 4 - The first task is to write the new price of the items which have risen by 20 euro cents. Second task - to add up 3 items of stationery at the new price. Worksheet 5 - Biggest Euro Sale Now On! - Students reduce the price of each item by 11 cents. They then recalculate the items of stationery bought. Additional worksheets: Drawing coins to match the price tags - students use the fewest number of coins as many times as they can. Add up the coins and write the total on the price tag for each object shown. Challenge: Students add up all the prices on the tags and write the total amount of money spent. This pack relates to euros and euro cents currency. Updated 17 May 2022 to include two versions of the original Presentation and worksheets showing the different ways euros/cents are written. Aimed at KS1/Kindergarten/Grade 1 and ESL/EFL students. The presentation can be used as follow-up to the first pack and builds upon the skills students have learnt previously. It still uses a step-by-step approach to teaching money but using higher value coins. This pack contains: <strong>A comprehensive PowerPoint Presentation (53 Slides) - divided into convenient sections. </strong> 1.Reviewing coins and their values, money exchange and using the 50c, €1 and €2 coins. 2. Using €1 and €2 euro coins. Using combination of coins to equal the value of the one euro and two euro coins. 3. Using euros and cents together - this is explained in the presentation with various whole class activities 4. Giving change from €1 and € 2 euro coins. The Presentation also includes whole class activities and different strategies students can use to work out money problems. Students also learn to change, e.g. 125 cents to €1.25/1,25€. **4 Flexible Lesson Plans - contains objectives, plenaries and main lesson. PowerPoint Slides are referred to in the lesson plans. ** Some preparation is required: Laminate the coin sheets, coin cards and price tags for practical tasks at tables. <strong>Worksheets</strong> <strong>Lesson 1</strong> - Adding up combinations of euro coins (2 worksheets). At the Mall (2 worksheets) - adding two items. Extension adding three items. <strong>Lesson 2</strong> - You will need the coin sheets or you can use plastic euro money. Students draw or use the laminated coins to work out different combination of coins that equal €1. Challenge: Different combination of coins that equal two euros. E.g. 50c + 20c + 20c + 10c = €1 <strong>Lesson 3</strong> - Two-part money activity Worksheets (x2). Section A - students complete the table; Section B - students complete the addition sums. <strong>Lesson 4</strong> - 2 Giving change activity. Students in groups at their table. Students take turns to pick a €1 coin card and a price label. The rest of the students in the group work out the change. Challenge: Working out change from €2. (1) Write the value opposite the coin and practise writing the euro signs. (2) Cut and paste each coin to the correct value shown. <strong>Lesson 2</strong> - Let’s Go Shopping (1) - adding two items together Let’s Go Shopping (2) - adding three items together Optional cut and paste Match up Money Bags activity - Students add the prices of the pictures together to get the total and then match the bag of 1 cent coins to the correct sum. <strong>Lesson 3</strong> - 4 Worksheets called Euro Money Bags 1, 2, 3, and 4.
